Seascape May 2011

Member Recognition Program: Thank you to all members that have volunteered for the cruises, Jack London Boat Show, Mills College Day and Sailstice planning. All of these events are targeted at attracting new members and retaining current members and it’s great to see so many long-time and new members participating.

As an incentive for members to continue these volunteer efforts, your Commodore has officially launched an OYC Member Recognition Program. Each member that provides volunteer help with a major Club event, chairs a committee and/or is a regular member of a committee, will be awarded with recognition points and will receive a “gold star” or equivalent on his/her member badge. Members of the OYC Board of Directors are not eligible for this program (at least not this first year) as each BOD member already is considered an ultimate OYC volunteer.

At the Change of Watch in November, the top member volunteers will be recognized for their efforts. Further details of this Member Recognition Program are highlighted in a separate article in this Seascape.

Mills College Day: Steve Jellinek did a fantastic job in organizing our first outreach program with the Mills College Sailing Club. Seven Mills College students showed up for the day and several OYC skippers, Dick Johnson, Jim Jessie, Len and Barbara Cardoza, Bob and Sue Englehart, Fazale Sharif and family, and the Russell’s provided boats and sailing expertise. The Mills girls and OYC skippers had a great sail and the weather was perfect.

Jack London Boat Show: We managed to get a great location this year for the OYC booth. Our Membership Chairs, Niki and Dennis Rampe, did a fabulous job with pictures, banners, special volunteer tee-shirts and getting 26 OYC Members to volunteer for this event. Niki indicates we received over 35 prospective member cards―Way to Go OYC! So now we just need to convince those 35 to officially join!

Sailing Adventure: Michael Russell has left for his adventure in the Cayman Islands. He is meeting Paul Cahill (Past Commodore) and helping him sail Xanadu from the Cayman Islands to Miami. Michael couldn’t leave without some new electronic toys like a “Spot” and a small, water-proof video camera, so I’m sure they will both have plenty of stories to tell us next month.

InterClub Race Series: April 16 was the start of the 2011 InterClub Race Series. There are about 42 entries and approximately one third are OYC Members, so there are many familiar faces and boats and fierce competition.

Nothing exciting to report about the first race for Haute to Go other than we finished first, but since we owe so much time to other racers, our corrected time placed us 3rd behind OYC Racers Diana (Islander 36) Steve Zevanove and Scrimshaw (Alerion Express 28) Michael Maurier. Additionally our own Race Chair, John Tuma was aboard an EYC Cal 39, Spindrift, and although we beat them, the skipper has declared that Haute to Go is her target. Soooooo stay tuned for a fun race season.

July 4th Water Games and Cardboard Boat Races: Mark your calendar now to reserve July 4 for OYC Water Games. As in the past, we will have the traditional Rubber Duck Races, dinghy races and other water challenges. A new event this year will be Cardboard Boat Races. Dave Lyman has been assisting me with preliminary plans for this event, but we need a few more volunteers to help finalize the boat building instructions and logistics. Please let me know via email, phone or in person if you would like to help.

Coming Events: Don’t forget the many upcoming OYC Events scheduled for May. There are major activities almost every weekend of the month. Check the Upcoming Events section of Seascape for dates and mark your calendar accordingly.

If you have any recommendations, comments, or issues you would like the Commodore and/or BOD to address, please call me at 925-944-0691 or email me at connierussell1@comast.net.

Use your boat, have fun and support your Club!

Brian Cooley, Vice Commodore

The Harbor Committee met on April 7, at 7:00 p.m. The following committee members were present: Past Commodore Bob Paulsen, Staff Commodore Len Cardoza, Steve Jellinek, Bill Clark, Jim Macintire, Sanders LaMont, Club Manager Craig Wong and Vice Commodore Brian Cooley.

After introductions, Craig Wong gave his Club Manager’s Report. Craig reported that the Army Corps of Engineers agreed to take and dispose of the old finger on Dock 7. This saved the Club the $500 cost of disposal. The next finger to be replaced is the west side of slip 229. In addition to this, Craig said that Paul will be re-decking the connecting walkways between Docks 4 and 5. He will use boards salvaged from the remodeled guest dock. As we can, we will continue to re-deck the other connecting walkways. Craig reported that the materials for child proofing the gangways have been ordered and should arrive by April 15. Once they are delivered, the project will be scheduled.

Craig reported that dock carts are missing from Docks 4 and 6. Two new carts have been ordered at a cost of $650 each. Craig said that there has been a problem with sewage in the marina and asked for suggestions on how best to manage this situation. We are asking all members with a boat in the marina to be careful with the use of heads, and to properly and frequently pump out your holding tanks.

There was an informal discussion on the best way to fill the vacant end tie on Dock 7. It was agreed that if we could not get one large boat to fill this spot, we would put two boats there. This discussion gave Craig some direction on how best to fill the end tie and what the fees should be.

Staff Commodore Len Cardozo reported that he has drafted a letter to the City of Alameda relative to their responsibilities for dredging. The letter will be sent this week.

Rear Commodore Dave Marshburn reported that the permit from the City of Alameda for flags and signage on the water-side of the Club is moving forward under one permit.

Vice Commodore Brian Cooley reported that he had received a bid to replace all of the dock gate locks with new electric locks at a cost of $30,932. More information was needed and the matter will be carried over to the next meeting when more cost information would be available.

Chuck Baker demonstrated how to build an inexpensive escape ladder, which was very impressive.

The next Harbor Committee Meeting is Thursday, May 5 at 7:00 p.m., in the Regatta Room.

Dave Marshburn, Rear Commodore

Have you noticed the signs of Spring around Oakland Yacht Club? I’m seeing new members, new boats, new dinghies, and new stuff everywhere. Well, maybe not new new, but definitely new to the owners. It’s that time of year to dust off the stuff we have accumulated over the years (or maybe just over the winter).

The House Committee is doing just that with a Spring Cleaning Day scheduled for June 4. Put it on your calendar and let Carmen Konkle know you are available. Let’s all pitch in to get our Club shipshape for the Summer Sailstice, to be held on June 18.

Did you check the May calendar for upcoming events? I did and was surprised to see May and June are full of activities. Better get everything on your calendar so you won’t be left behind as the OYC fleet heads out to more adventures. Unsure about what’s upcoming? Check out our OYC Website at www.oaklandyachtclub.net or the list of future events found in this edition of Seascape.

Some of you may have noticed that you are constantly being asked, “What did you think of ……?” Well, it’s because your Committees, Flags and BOD want to know what we can do better to encourage more member satisfaction and participation. We have seen improvements with member participation in a number of areas, but we are not resting on our successes. In an effort to get more input from each of you, we have added Comment Cards in the upstairs dining area and the office area. At the suggestion of Anne Jacobson, Marsha Stark, and Chris Bailey, we have partnered with Survey Monkey to implement frequent member surveys to gather your thoughts on various aspects of Oakland Yacht Club. We look forward to your input and hope you will help us effect change by giving us your thoughts and suggestions as you receive our emails. Printed copies of the surveys will be available at the office should you prefer a paper copy. The survey process is completely automatic and the results will be posted immediately following the close of a survey period.

Summer Sailstice opportunities are just around the corner ― June 18 at Oakland Yacht Club. BE THERE! Carmen Konkle is looking for volunteers to contribute to a bake sale to raise funds for OYC’s 2013 One Hundred Year Anniversary. The bake sale will be held on Saturday the 18th. Contact Carmen and volunteer to donate cakes, brownies, fudge, cupcakes, cookies, pies, sodas or water and most importantly, to volunteer time to meet and greet all the wonderful people who will be attending the Summer Sailstice Event.

OYC Signage Projects are on hold awaiting the completion of the City of Alameda permit process. Any day now―or so I’m told―watch for Phil Helman, Dave Lyman, Craig Wong and Paul Flaner to begin the installation work.

The Spring Season transition isn’t complete without a landscaping project. Carmen Konkle, our resident Master Gardener, is taking on the task of developing a list and prioritizing what projects we can do over the next year. A meeting is scheduled for May 4 with a local Alameda Master Gardener to identify, discuss, and plan future projects. Who knows, we may have a Saturday landscaping work party in the near future. Pizza and beverage anyone?

So, just a reminder to stop, look, and listen for the opportunity to get involved, enjoy, and contribute to the Oakland Yacht Club Community.

The next House Committee Meeting is Friday, May 6 at 5:00 p.m., in the Regatta Room.

Treasurer's Report

Bob Engelhart

Ahoy Shipmates. Brief report this month―wore myself out at the Boat Show. The Club continues to operate, speaking financially, on the margin. That is, we have a close ratio between revenues and expenses. We continue, but not blindly, to maintain the Club's services to Members―we're paying our bills, capital projects remain viable, and we continue to host social activities.

As I've mentioned in past articles, the Flags, your Board of Directors, and Club Manager Craig Wong continue to monitor the Club's Finances, and the Budget & Finance Committee has met several times to discuss a number of options to strengthen and improve our finances. All options focus on restructuring various debt instruments; there are two versions of a majority proposal under consideration and a minority proposal.

As I've encouraged in this column in the past, help the Club and enjoy yourselves at the same time. Participate in Club activities, berth your boat here (but hurry, not many vacancies in the harbor), pay your bills on time, consider auto-pay or paying by credit card, encourage your friends to join the Club, and above all, enjoy the Club and the camaraderie of your OYC Shipmates. By the way, a big thank you to Niki and Dennis, Membership Directors, for organizing the Club's Boat Show efforts; I believe we've already seen some new members and, as I said, if you want to berth your boat here, don't wait.

That about wraps it up. We continue to have a tight budget and the timing of revenues and expenses is as much a challenge as balancing revenues and expenses. Our Harbor & House reserves are healthy and well funded, and available to continue projects that keep OYC safe and in good repair. And we have a Harbor Reconfiguration Fund.

As I mentioned last month, April began the Club's budget cycle, and several committees have been asked to prepare their budgets for Fiscal Year 2012, which begins in January. These budgets will be submitted to Club Manager Craig Wong this month, reviewed by the B&F Committee and built into a preliminary financial plan. More to follow next month―as I learn and figure it out.

See you at the Club.

Membership Report

Dennis and Niki-Maguire Rampe

The 2011 Strictly Sail Pacific® Boat Show at Jack London Square was an enormous success for the Oakland Yacht Club. Our booth was in an optimal position for heavy foot traffic and chatty mariners. The Membership Committee is delighted to inform all OYC Members that every volunteer, with no exception, showed up for their allotted times and days, most donning our new OYC T-Shirts that match our new banner and theme: “Where the fun starts…” This gave our Club an organized, professional and outgoing presence to new potential members and, within the first week after the show, we had signed up two new members, filled both of our vacant 42’ slips, and have many more leads on which we are working. To follow up with all the acquaintances made during the show, we have decided to throw a “Dock WELCOME Party” and extend an invitation to all who want to meet our Club Members and tour our facility. The tentative date for this next event will be Saturday May 14 in the afternoon. If anyone might be willing to help us organize this event, please call Niki Maguire-Rampe at 925-788-0042. We are hoping that many OYC Members will be on their boats that day and chat with visiting prospects. Please watch the website and the bulletin board for more details.

The behalf of OYC, we would like to specifically thank all those who helped with the Boat Show! Our thanks go to the following: Phil Helman, Bob and Susan Engelhart, Chris Bailey, Mary Campbell, Doug and Pam Hipsley, Roy Stark, Julie Lucchesi, Sandy Jacobson, Andy Aaron, Richard Keller, Chris and Rachael Collins, Richard and Susana Majors, John England, Ron Konkle, Richard & Louise Einspahr, Ran Wyder, Anna and Cliff Kramer (who provided wonderful refreshments), Don Roland, Mike and Connie Russell, Bob and Bobbi Chope – with their wonderful energy!

Thank you all for a job well done―we’re feeling new positive energy everywhere!

Race and Sail Committee

John Tuma, Race Chair

Greetings OYC Racers, Members, and Friends! April is a quiet month for racing at Oakland Yacht Club. The Sunday Brunch Series is over, the Rites of Spring just a memory, and Summer Wednesday Nights have not yet started. So what do OYC Racers do? They race the InterClub Series!

The InterClub Series is sponsored by six East and South Bay yacht clubs. Each club sponsors one race, which is typically held on the second Saturday of the month, from April through September. The first race was sponsored by Treasure Island Yacht Club on April 16, and offered racers a South Bay Course, a strong ebb, light winds at the start, and strong winds at the finish. OYC racers dominated the non-spinnaker division, taking six of the first seven places. Complete results are available at http://www.sfbayraces.com/racedoc/IC_T0080176r1.html.

Racing continues at OYC with Summer Sweet 16 Series, which starts on May 4 and continues through June 22. After a short break, the second half picks up on July 13, and the series continues every Wednesday through August 31. The notice of race, sailing instructions, course sheets, and entry forms are available on the racing page on the OYC website www.oaklandyachtclub.net, and also at our racing website, at http://sites.google.com/site/oycracing/Home.

If you would like to help out on race committee, please let me know. We have a limited number of spaces available, so don’t hesitate. Call Now! If you think you might be interested, call me at 510-366-1476, or send me an email at race@oaklandyachtclub.com.

See you out there!

Mills College Sail Day A Success!

Steve Jellinek

Sunday, April 10, was our outreach to Mills College Sail Day at OYC. We hosted seven enthusiastic Mills College Sailors―they all want to come back for more! Now that we know there is interest, future events will be on a less formal basis. Recognition is deserved by Colette Bowler and Themy-jo Adachi, of Mills Athletics, for development of this association on the Mills side. I expect to have an arrangement for exchange of emails or such for their participation in officiating race events, sailing, or just helping as need on some of our Club Projects. Mills Sailing Club has 14 members; they are looking forward to forming a reciprocal relationship with OYC.

Very special thanks to Connie and Mike Russell, Dick Johnson, Jim Jessie, Bob and Susan Engelhart, Len and Barbara Cardoza, Fazale Sharif and family for their active participation!

Good Luck!

Recreational Boaters of California (RBOC)

Past Commodore, Doug Hipsley

Recreational Boaters of California (RBOC) represents all California boaters and operates solely on donations from the boating community. RBOC has represented boaters before Local, Regional, State, and National Governmental Agencies since 1966. At the State Capitol in early April, I personally met with Cabinet Member John Laird, Secretary of Natural Resources who is responsible for Department of Cal Boating, Assembly Member Bill Monning 27th District, Assembly Member Joan Buchanan 15th, Assembly Member Jim Silva 67th District, and a Staff Member of Senator Mark DeSaulinier 7th District. We discussed the following proposed legislation and issues important to recreational boating:

  • Prohibit the manufacture, sale, and use of copper-based anti-fouling surfaces.
  • Loan boater fuel tax dollars and registration fees to the state general fund.
  • Eliminate funding for the state loan program for boating infrastructure.
  • Impose new barriers to navigation across waterways boaters frequent.
  • Address the growing infestation of waterways by invasive species.
  • Expand a state bureaucracy to address abandoned vessels that is currently handled by Cal Boating.
  • Replace the boating community's best management practices, as approved by Cal Boating and the California Coastal Commission, in addressing environmental pollution with onerous and expensive permit requirements for marinas determined and issued by the Cal Water Quality Control Board.

I have been a Director and Past President (2005) of RBOC for twelve years and Commodore of OYC in 1994. I have first-hand knowledge of the legislative process. I have seen Assembly Members and Senators come and go, but I am still here. Fortunately RBOC has no term limits. This allows us to develop networks in the State Capitol that are important to recreational boating with both elected officials and bureaucrats.

If you have any questions on issues or suggestions on how RBOC can better serve you, please email me at djhpacifico@gmail.com.

In closing, I hope you will support RBOC by making a voluntary contribution when given the opportunity when you receive your monthly OYC billing statement in June.

New Members – Welcome!

Jeff and Mary Berman from Oakland have s/v Perseverance, a Catalina 36 berthed at Grand Marina, Gate ABC, slip B50. The following is Jeff boating experience: “Having been raised on the waters of Long Island, I have been boating, motor and sail since before I could walk. Before the age of 10, I was piloting my family’s twin engine Owens. We had smaller speed-boats and a sailing dinghy simultaneously. My experience includes being a driver of cars, motorcycles, and yachts of all sizes. In the years of owning Perseverance, I have sailed her more than 15,000 miles. I have made deliveries from San Francisco to San Diego (and back) many times. In addition to single-handing Perseverance for many races in and out of the Bay, I have crewed on other boats for racing for 15 years. We also enjoy taking groups of 12+ on Perseverance. It seems like the dinner cruise is a regular event on Perseverance, a very popular time with friends, family and work-related friends.

“Having single-handed Perseverance from Southern California to San Francisco, my sea experience includes up to 50-knot winds with seas to match. Being extremely safety conscious, Perseverance includes primary and backup GPS, charts, life raft, dinghy, generator, 2nd ships radio, spare engine parts, enough tools and supplies to fix about anything. I keep my boat in Bristol condition.

"I am also computer/electronic savvy, mechanically astute and an excellent trouble-shooter of problems. This fits nicely with my project management skill―I am the guy you want around when something goes awry.”

The following is Mary’s boating experience: “I first sailed the waters of Chesapeake Bay as a child on my uncle’s Pearson 34. Once married to Jeff, boating came back into my life. I have been as far north as Bodega Bay, and as far South as Catalina Island, and as far west as 50 miles offshore. Though not a able bodied seaman, I enjoy being on Perseverance, enjoying the sights and sounds of the water, going to the Delta, and sharing time with Jeff, family and friends. Additionally, I ride horses, sew quilts, embroidery almost anything, and work hard during the week.” Welcome Jeff and Mary!

Jim and Kara Leither from Alameda have m/v Illywhacker, a 46 foot Hatteras CPMY currently berthed at Jack London Square Marina, while waiting for slip availability at OYC. Jim, a retired helicopter pilot, grew up boating in Minnesota, Land of 10,000 Lakes. At the age of 10, he built his first hydroplane, and was crewing every summer for charter boats into Canada before he was old enough to drive. Kara, an RN in Sacramento, has had a love of boating since a child, spending every summer at her family lakehouse in Michigan. Jim and Kara are currently renting an apartment in Marina View Towers, with a spectacular view of OYC and its marina. Previously they were full time live-aboards on Illywhacker.

Jim and Kara’s boating plans have them cruising to the Sea of Cortez in the not-so-distant future, and they look forward to enjoying the OYC amenities and meeting new friends while they are here. Welcome Jim and Kara!

Tim Stainken and Cathy Fanella from Danville have s/v Simplicity, a Sabre 34 berthed at Fortmans, Slip J-21. Tim started sailing as a teenager on Long Island Sound. He has over 30 years of boating experience, which includes 20+ years sailing the Bay, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Block Island and SF to LA.

Cathy is a bit newer to sailing, getting her time in on the Bay and two trips to Catalina Island.

Tim has had two Ericson’s, one Beneteau and a Caliber. Cathy reminds him he has never found a boat that he did not like―so on to their Sabre, boat number five. Welcome Tim and Cathy!

Farewell To The Labbe’s

Desley Oliphant

Goodbye, adieu, au revoir, adios, auf Wiedersehen, sayonara, ciao…ok, you get the idea. Well-wishers filled the Regatta Room to capacity on April 9 as they gathered to bid a fond farewell to Jim and Judy Labbe. Good food and drinks and lots of good humor made this a great evening for all. Many thanks to everyone for the wonderful potluck dishes you brought to share.

As most of you know, The Labbe’s, aboard Sparky, are heading to the Pacific Northwest to cruise Puget Sound and beyond―Alaska perhaps?―for approximately six months. Have a wonderful cruise, Judy and Jim. Hurry back to us to share your tales! You’ll be missed by all.

  • Icom M1 Handheld Marine Radio. Used, includes the manual, belt clip, one NiCad battery, strap, but no charger. The buyer will need to find a charger for this or get one from Icom. You may to acquire another battery – this battery is good, but self-drained from sitting idle for a long time. Given all these limitations, I will sell for $20 cash.
